MATERIAL HANDLING BUSINESSTRENDS

Material handling professionals must beprepared to address the factors impacting their organizations today and in thecoming year. MHEDA’s Board of Directors develops theMaterial Handling Business Trends each year and then creates programming andservices around these trends and challenges. Members are encouraged to shareand discuss these factors with key managers to develop their own organizationalgoals and action steps. The 2020 Business Trends are significant challenges oropportunities that have recently emerged or become pervasive and should beconsidered as members develop their internal business plans.

2020 Material Handling BusinessTrends Impacting the Industry

The industry is experiencing aneconomic softening. Certain trends are pointing to this including the onset ofshorter lead times, economic indicators, decreasing new equipment sales,increase in short term rentals and downturns in the automotive and othermarkets. Members must identify forward looking metrics (sales pipeline, quoteactivities, etc.) and manage assets and operational costs accordingly.

To respond to margin pressure,members should implement a periodic and ongoing review of value-added pricingstrategies.

(Factory direct sales, third party providers, competitive dealerselling processes, online sales, advances in technology and customer demandsfor single source purchasing.) Members must be forward thinking as to how theirorganization will evolve and provide service/value to the end user.

Consolidation continues to change thecomposition of the industry. Owners must consider different strategies for thefuture of their business depending on their desire to sell, acquire or betterposition the company.

In order to strengthen the customerrelationship and provide a potential revenue stream, members must devote thenecessary resources to ensure their customers are fully utilizing thecapability of the equipment, data collection and other technologies they havepurchased.为了加强客户关系并提供潜在的收入来源,会员必须投入必要的资源,以确保其客户充分利用设备、数据收集和其他技术的能力购买。

Members must commit to and implementa comprehensive and continuous digital marketing campaign to grow and brandtheir business to keep pace with industry leaders. The right digital talentneeds to be hired or outsourced for the organization.

The demand for automated solutionscontinues to increase. Members need to be positioned to capitalize on thistrend.

Members must recognize thatrecruitment is a highly competitive process. They must drastically change theirrecruiting methods to find qualified employees.

Members must invest the necessaryresources for the professional development, mentorship and retention of theiremployees in order to position the business for future success.

Traditional workplace practices arebeing challenged. Members must be aware of cultural differences and create apositive environment that supports a multi-generational workforce.传统的工作场所做法正在受到挑战。成员必须了解文化差异,并创造支持不同年龄段的劳动力的积极环境。


NOTE: There continues to be ongoingimportant business issues that members need to recognize and consider includingemployee benefits, cyber security, consolidation, proposed regulatory policies,etc.
